Reading the Treble Clef

Use second-line G to unlock every line and space in treble clef.

Grade 1 foundations · Read and practise without an account

Start with G

The treble clef circles G

The treble clef curls around the second line, G. One staff step down is F in the first space; one step up is A in the second space.

What to notice: G is a starting point, not a different naming system. Count through the musical alphabet from a note you know.

Treble lines and spaces

Lines, bottom to top
Spaces, bottom to top

The lines are E, G, B, D, F; the spaces spell FACE: F, A, C, E, from bottom to top. Use these patterns or count steps from a known note, such as second-line G.

What to notice: For the lines, 'Every Good Boy Does Fine' is an optional memory aid. Its first letters give E, G, B, D, F.

Read these three notes from left to right.

Recap

Anchor, then step
